Detailing the engine compartment can get as involved as removing various components for bead blasting, cleaning and repainting.
Or you can limit the detailing to just a good degreasing. The choice is up to you, depending on your budget and time.
But the primary purpose is to remove the majority of the dirt, grease and oil from the engine compartment. Sounds simple doesn't it. Yes, it just takes time and can be done at your pace. Do a good job and you won't mind lifting up your hood at the local car shows or cruse nights.
At Custom Wheel Polish
we will provide you with information about the best products to make your engine compartment look great.

Cleaning and degreasing the engine compartment can do potential damage to both the environment and your vehicle including the risk of harming the electrical system. So take precautions to cover up electrical components and limit damage to the environment. Because some degreasers are caustic (high PH) you should wear safety glasses and chemical resistant gloves.
The best place to degrease your vehicle is at a manual car wash that has a regulated designated area for degreasing engines. You can then use the degreaser of your choice and have the added benefit of a high pressure hot water system.
If you are going to do this job at make sure you degrease when the engine is completely cooled and in a shaded or covered area. To prevent any staining of your paint wash down the surrounding areas with water and car wash soap. This includes the fenders, hood, grille and wheel wells. Make lots of suds and don't wash off until your engine compartment is clean.
Your first step in the degreasing process is to wet the engine down with a stream of water to allow the
degreaser to spread out more evenly. This will also reduce the amount of
degreaser needed. Apply the degreaser and follow the directions for the length of time needed to let it sit and work effectively. Scrub and areas with excessive grease and oils with a parts brush or old used paint brush. After the appropriate amount of time rinse the entire compartment with high
pressure from your garden hose.

We also like to use
Armor All
to make our engine compartment shine. Some detailers will disagree, claiming that Armor All will attract dust. The Secret is to let it dry before using your car. It works great on black painted inter fenders, hoses, black plastic etc.
