A car wax is best described as a "finish product".
Their purpose is to provide durability to your car's finish. Usually with emulsified silicone fluids and waxes. Compounds and polish contain solvents and abrasives.
A wax is different from these compounds and polishes because it less abrasive powder or the powder is very soft. The combination of these light powders and active ingredients give the wax it's depth, shine and moderate durability.

Wax is protection between your paint and the hash environment. It provides a layer that will wear away slowly before the paint does. The best waxes tested last no more than two months or 6 to 8 hand wash jobs. Wax your car often as it is less expensive than a new paint job.
Most detailers agree that two thin coats of wax are the easiest and best way to apply waxes and should be done by hand. We recommend a top of the line

wax such as Carnauba Plus made by Production Care Car Products. Apply the wax you choose to a terrycloth hand towel folded over about 1/2 inch thick. Terrycloth hand towels are available at most auto parts stores and even
Wal-Mart. Place a small amount of wax in the center of the towel and apply this to a 2 to 3 foot square section of your car starting with the roof and work downward. On each 2 to 3 foot section work the wax into the paint surface using pressure at first then ease up gradually as the wax dries and
develops a gloss. Wipe this section clean of dried wax with a clean terrycloth towel and move on to another section. Failure to keep using clean towels will result in excessive swirl marks.
