First thing first! Do not use dish washing soaps. They will strip wax from your paint.

There are several products designed as washing aids containing no soap or detergents. Meguiars , Mother's and Eagle One make excellent products. You will also need 2 buckets, a washing mitt or sponge, chamois for drying, hose and spray nozzle, assortment of soft bristle brushes to clean around trim and if needed bug and tar remover.

Do not wash your car in the sun if possible. Early morning or late afternoon is best. If your water is hard (high mineral content) dry your vehicle ASAP after washing. Wash any heavy dirt off your car before you start. Use a spray nozzle for this. You don't want to drag this dirt around with the washing mitt, scratching the paint. Don't forget the wheel wells and tires.

In one bucket make a washing solution according to the manufactures direction. Don't guess measure! Make lots of suds to hold dirt in suspension while washing to lessen the possible of scratching your car. The second bucket is for clear water to rinse off the mitt as it becomes dirty. Work one section at a time starting with the roof, then trunk and hood. Avoid hard scrubbing of the paint that may cause scratches. If you find something on the paint that light scrubbing can handle use Turtle Wax Bug and Tar Remover. Rinse as you wash then rinse the entire car and dry with a chamois.
